Chapter 12

Mia

Later that night, so that my parents didn’t grow suspicious, I retired to my room to bathe and get ready for bed and wait for time to sneak out and see Owen. Just knowing he was out there, waiting for me, to make love to me—or fuck, whatever it was—it made my body burn with desire.

I didn’t want to think it as anything more than it was, but with him defending me to my parents still had me beaming. I had never been able to stifle them, not one day in my entire life, and Owen handled them like he really was my boyfriend. Like he loved me.

I heard my mother retire to her room, and then I listened carefully for my father as I lay there thinking about Owen. The intensity of those feelings was so great that I couldn’t help but reach down between my legs and rub my tender clit. As the feelings of pleasure consumed me, I closed my eyes and imagined him between my legs with his fingers working me deep and his tongue tasting me.

I felt my body reach its climax, and then I couldn’t wait a minute longer to have him. I went to the bathroom and washed my hands, then looked at myself in the mirror, noticing the color in my face was flushed. I used a bit of mouthwash again, wanting my breath to be as fresh as possible, and then I hurried down the stairs.

It had been so long now, there was no way my father was up that late, and I must have missed him going up to bed when I was playing with myself under the covers.

But as I rounded the corner to the kitchen, I passed the front room, where my father sat drinking as he watched out the front window. “Where are you going?” he asked.

I stopped in my tracks and pulled my robe tight around myself. “I just wanted some water.” I walked into the room to join him. Had he been waiting to see what I’d do? Where I’d go? If I were sneaking out to be with my lover the same way he’d sneaked around to be with his?

“What are you doing up?” I asked.

“Your sister and her family are on their way. They were able to leave early, and that put their arrival around 1:00 a.m., so here I am.” He lifted his glass and took a drink.

“That’s not the house stock,” I said, noting he was drinking from a whiskey glass. My father only touched the stuff when he had big worries.

“Yeah, I thought I’d break out the old bottle for old time’s sake. This stuff is the only thing that doesn’t change around here.”

I had a feeling my growing up and becoming a woman had finally caught up with him. “Change is a good thing, Dad.”

“What do you want with this man, Mia? What do you think your life will be like if you marry him? You’re not cut out to be a military wife.
